Virtual Learning and Carnivals on Campus During the War

Foam machines, inflatable bounce houses, and carnival games — in the middle of a war? That’s right! When air-raid sirens were sounding almost daily, and tension filled the air, several hundred children living on Migdal Ohr’s campus with their Mishpachton foster families you provided them with an unexpected gift: a few hours of fun and normalcy.

These children, many of whom have experienced abuse, neglect, and profound loss, are Migdal Ohr’s absolute priority during times of war. Sirens can be deeply triggering for them, bringing back memories of fear and instability from home.

Even with incredible foster families and mentors by their side, the days with war and sirens can be long, stressful, and confusing.

So, what did the Mishpachton families do? They planned a surprise carnival, complete with foam machines, bounce houses, games, and sunshine — right on campus, within a minute’s run of the safe rooms. For an afternoon, the children laughed and played so freely that they forgot all about the war outside.

This is the heart of Migdal Ohr: unconditional love, creative support, and the constant reminder to every child that they are safe, cared for, and never alone.

One of Migdal Ohr’s devoted principals, Rabbi Shimon Reiss, put it best:

“The reality is tough and challenging — but we stand firm and continue with determination. The children need us now more than ever — and we are there for them every moment.”

Virtual Classes Continue the Connection

Our dedicated teaching staff worked tirelessly to keep older students connected, supported, and learning through the war. Zoom lessons, emotional check-ins, empowering conversations — the staff knew that even if regular lessons weren’t always possible, the simple act of showing up for each child was the best gift they could give.

“The most important thing is to maintain contact with every single student,” explained Principal Reiss. “The connection, support, and presence of the staff are the most important resources that we can provide our children.”

Thank you for reminding Israel’s most vulnerable children that no matter what, they are seen, protected, and loved.
